You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Exodus 20:16 NKJV
Question
Would those who know you best describe you as a person whose words can always be trusted?
Context
Exodus 20:16 specifically addresses truthfulness. In its original context, this command prohibited giving false testimony in court, which could ruin an innocent person’s reputation, livelihood, or even life. Yet the principle extends far beyond the courtroom. God calls His people to be people of truth in every area of life.
Application
We live in a world where exaggeration, gossip, half-truths, and deception are common. It can be tempting to bend the truth to protect ourselves or make ourselves look better. However, every lie damages trust and dishonors the God who is truth. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). As followers of Christ, our words should reflect His character.
Truthfulness builds strong relationships, healthy churches, and a powerful witness to the world. Even when telling the truth is difficult, God honors integrity. A believer’s reputation should be marked by honesty and reliability.
Truth For The Day
God is honored when His people speak the truth and live with integrity.
Pray
Lord, thank You for being a God of truth. Help me guard my words and live with integrity. Forgive me for any dishonesty in my life, and teach me to speak truth with love and grace. May my words reflect the character of Christ and bring honor to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
